How call recording works in Klear

Call recording used to be a simple feature on Android. That changed with Android 9 (2018): Google progressively removed the ability for third-party apps to capture the audio of an ongoing phone call. On most phones running Android 12 and later, an app that tries to record a call receives only its own microphone feed — often silence or one-sided, muffled audio — rather than the actual call channel.

Klear works around this the same way privileged-access tools like Shizuku do. A tiny companion app, Hust, uses Android’s own wireless debugging to grant Klear the elevated permission needed to read the real call-audio stream. There is no root, and after a one-time pairing you don’t need a computer again.

Once Hust is paired, recording happens entirely on the device: audio is captured, optionally transcribed on-device, and stored locally. Klear handles starting and stopping recordings around your calls automatically.

Requirements & limitations

Because of Android’s platform restrictions, call recording in Klear is honest about what it needs and where it falls short:

An Android phone running Android 12 or newer.
The free Hust helper app, installed and paired once.
Developer options and wireless debugging enabled during pairing.
Re-pairing after a reboot — it takes a few seconds and needs no computer.
Recording quality is device-dependent; some manufacturers block the call-audio channel and Klear falls back to microphone + speakerphone.

Whether an app can reach the true call-audio channel depends on the phone manufacturer and its Android build. Broadly:
